How to Get the Required Teaching Credentials

To be a qualified teacher, one will be required to have achieved certain credentials. The credential requirements will differ from state to state as different state will have their own set of teaching credential requirements. Generally there are some basic credentials which are required before one is able to teach in a proper institution, they are; Single Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential, and Multiple Subject Credential. These are the fundamental requirements for all states. On top of the list given, different states might have other types of teaching credentials they are looking for.


A Multiple Subject Credential will enable the applicant to apply for a teaching position in a grade school teaching environment. Where they will be given the power to teach inside a classroom in which one teacher handles different subjects, academic or otherwise.


As for teachers holding the Single Subject Teaching Credentials, they will be given the opportunity to teach the subject of their specialty. This is applicable to both high school and junior high school students, and anywhere else that follows a departmentalized form of instruction.

In order to be able to teach in a school where the target audiences are adults and children with certain disability, one will be required to be a holder of Education Specialist Teaching Credentials before they will be considered for such teaching positions. The Education Specialist Credential is further classified into mild or moderate and moderate or severe. For those who are interested to teach autistic toddlers, pre-school, and even infants, there is an Early Childhood Special Education Specialist Credential which they can consider pursing. 

There are a set of prescribe requirements for each teaching credentials which should be achieve before one is granted any of the mentioned teaching credentials. The first and most fundamental requirement would be the completion of a baccalaureate degree in any field other than the education degree that you are holding. It is also important that the baccalaureate degree obtained is from an accredited university or college or unless it will be deemed worthless.


There is also a special program of professional training which all teachers will have to first go through before they are awarded any of the teaching credentials they are pursing. The training would include teaching in a supervised environment and several other performance assessments. In most institutions, this professional training is usually integrated in the course of the education degree in the fourth or fifth year.


The teacher is also required to have taken and pass a certain test of comprehension, critical thinking, mathematics skills, and writing. This test usually differs from one state to another, but the test will always be administrated under a state government-approved testing center.


It might be a long and tedious process before achieving the relevant teaching accreditation. However it is the only method to gain the passport to practice ones selected profession.
